BEHAVIOR
MANAGEMENT POLICY
The St. Joseph After School Program operates in a pleasant and
harmonious environment. Positive behavior in children is
encouraged through consistent expectations; realistic limits;
predictable routines and procedures; activities that meet the needs,
interests and abilities of the children; and the support of the parents.
Limits are set to ensure the safety of the whole group, to protect the
rights of individual children and to provide a positive atmosphere
whereby children can learn self-control and responsibility for their
actions when acting alone or as part of a group.
Staff reinforcement of positive behavior is the preferred disciplinary
technique. When negative behavior occurs, a child may be
redirected to another activity, asked to sit quietly for a short period
of time, or asked to work out he solution with another child.
The After School Program cannot serve children who display chronically
disruptive behavior. Disruptive behavior is defined as verbal or
physical activity which may include, but is not limited to, behavior
such as: physical or emotional harm to himself or another child,
persistent bullying, verbal harassment of peers or staff, unauthorized
departure from the grounds of the program, staff abuse, ignoring or
disobeying the rules which guide behavior during the program or behavior
that requires constant attention from the staff. School rules in
regards to uniform, jewelry, gun and candy, use of electronics and
returning important papers are in effect after school and detentions
will be given for these infractions.
In fairness to all children, disruptive behavior will be handled through
the following process:
1.
First Offense:
The child will be given a five minute time-out away from the activity at
hand. The staff member in charge will speak privately with the
child to determine the problem and seek solutions.
2. Second Offense:
If the child receives a second
time-out in the same day, an incident report will be completed by the
student and the staff member. This report will be shown to the
parent at pick up for them to read and sign. The report will be
kept in the coordinator's office.
3. Third Offense:
For a third offense in the same
day, an incident report will again be filled out and the after school
supervisor or coordinator will meet directly with the parent at pick up
time and set up an meeting to discuss the problem and seek solutions in
order for the student to continue in the program. If after meeting
with the parent, the negative behaviors continue, another meeting will
be necessary to discuss whether the student can remain in the After
School Program.
Please note that each behavioral situation is unique and the staff
members in charge reserve the right to make modifications to the
behavior management policy as they see fit for a particular situation.
These modifications may include different or additional consequences not
specified in this handbook.
