The mission of St. Joseph Pro-Cathedral and its ministries is to create a “21st Century Urban Ministry” that brings together diverse communities of people wiling to promote justice, provide economic and educational opportunities, and to transform the lives of the people of Camden.
The collective goals of our eight covenant ministries are to:
- Help families at all stages of their lives, from their formative years to their adult years
- Help people at all levels of need, from basic shelter to scholarships for advanced education
- Guide children through their formative years, breaking the cycle of illiteracy and poverty
- Seek justice and the dignity of life, answer the call to serve, and provide hope and help to all
Founded in 1892, the parish of St. Joseph has been an anchor of its East Camden community for well over a century. Presently located at 2907 Federal Street, the church is the spiritual home of more than 900 families.
Since 1985, Msgr. Robert T. McDermott has been pastor of St. Joseph Pro-Cathedral Parish, the parish in which he was raised and attended school. In his nearly 30 years of service to the people of East Camden, Msgr. McDermott has created or expanded numerous vital ministries aimed at caring for our brothers and sisters in need. In addition to his work as pastor, Msgr. McDermott serves as Vicar General of the Diocese of Camden and is responsible for all parishes of the city in their relationship with the Diocese.
